Abortion

You Have the Power to Influence the Next Generation!

It had been a difficult week. A local news operation had produced a glowing report on the abortion pill known as mifepristone, without any discussion of the drug’s inherent dangers. Another media outlet was citing a poll purporting to show that the number of Americans who believe that it is important to have children had dramatically dropped since the late 1990s. Media bias and misinformation seemed to be the order of the day.

Then, out of the blue, I received a phone call which rocked my world.

A faithful pro-life advocate was calling on behalf of her four-year-old great nephew. He had seen an image of the baby in the mother’s womb and was fascinated by it. As a result, he wanted a soft-touch fetal model to call his own.

I gladly complied with his request, thinking to myself that there is always hope in the next generation. That little boy recognizes the preciousness and humanity of the child in the womb—so much so, that he wants to be constantly reminded of it.

The brilliant songwriting team of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II once composed a song called “Carefully Taught” for the hit musical “South Pacific.”

It speaks of discrimination—and that you have to be taught to hate and fear. It’s so true, isn’t it? For instance, it seems as if we are born with a natural affinity for babies. But, by adopting abortion culture, our society teaches us to turn our backs on the most vulnerable among us.

In that four-year-old’s plea for a model of a preborn baby to call his own, I see a flicker of hope. If children can be taught to hate and fear, they can also be taught to love and accept. Never underestimate the power you have in influencing the next generation. They are eager to hear a life-affirming message and to carry it out in their young lives.

Pro-Abortion Takeover of PA House

Recent special elections in Pennsylvania have helped to usher in a new era in the Keystone State—an era in which, sadly, preborn children and their mothers face new legislative attacks.

With Democrats winning all three February special elections, the leadership of the PA House of Representatives is now in pro-abortion hands. As a result, citizens are bracing for a pro-abortion legislative assault from the lower chamber.

Pro-abortion legislative leaders would like to dismantle the Abortion Control Act. That landmark law was the basis of the U.S. Supreme Court case Planned Parenthood v. Casey in 1992. The law not only served as a model for the rest of the nation, but also gave rise to hundreds of additional protections for preborn children and their mothers throughout the various states.

The Abortion Control Act is a common sense law which provides for informed consent, parental consent, a 24-hour waiting period for abortions, a late-term abortion ban, and a ban on sex selection abortions.

It will be incumbent on pro-life advocates in Pennsylvania to contact their state representatives and make the case that the ACA is a time-tested law and should not be changed. Ironically, the move to dismantle the ACA comes at a time when abortions are on the rise in PA—fueled by a dramatic increase in chemical abortions.

Abortion facilities throughout the Commonwealth are also openly marketing to women in other states, hoping to boost their bottom lines with customers beyond Pennsylvania’s borders. Abortion business executives have made it clear—they want to expand abortion in Pennsylvania.

Statistics show 33,206 abortions took place in Pennsylvania in 2021, an increase of 1,083 abortions over the 2020 total of 32,123. Imagine how many kindergarten classes the number 1,083 represents. We mourn the loss of these precious children, who never got the chance to see their mother’s face.

Thankfully, the Pennsylvania state Senate stands as a firewall against pro-abortion initiatives coming from a hostile PA House of Representatives and Governor’s Office. The upper chamber will no doubt be playing defense against what is expected to be a flurry of pro-abortion legislation coming from the PA House.

Gratefully, PA is also home to a vibrant, energetic pro-life movement which stands ready to defend the most vulnerable among us—no matter what the political odds.

Hyde Amendment Saves Lives

They had both been born in the same country, but never met until after each had migrated to the U.S. They were young and filled with hope when they married—a union which would lead to seven children.

He supported his family as a barber, but he found that, in times of economic downturn, customers could be hard to come by. At Christmastime, a local firehouse would provide gifts for his beloved children, who well knew the poverty of their state in life.

These were my Italian grandparents, Leonard and Theresa. They may have had little in material goods, but they had plenty of love to spare.

I think of them often when pro-abortion politicians threaten to take away the Hyde Amendment, which ensures no taxpayer funding of abortion except in the rare cases of rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother.

I think of my grandparents because, while materially poor, they were rich in principles. And they viewed each of their children as a treasure.

It is condescending and classist to claim that low-income people “need” abortion. What they need is material and emotional support for themselves and their families. It seems especially revolting if a pregnant woman needs help with her rent payment and she is instead extended a cold-hearted offer to take the life of her preborn child.

It has been estimated that 2.5 million Americans are alive today because of the Hyde Amendment. It has stood the test of time and should not be tampered with. Attacking the Hyde Amendment is an attack on people who lack basic resources. It is unconscionable, and should not be permitted in a civilized society.

PA Abortion Totals Rise But the Number Would be Much Higher Were It Not for Pregnancy Help

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                CONTACT:  MARIA GALLAGHER, PPLF

January 2, 2023                                                                                    717-541-0034

HARRISBURG, PA—The number of abortions rose in Pennsylvania during the year 2021, according to figures released by the PA Department of Health.

“Every abortion is a tragedy, but the increase in the number of abortions in Pennsylvania is particularly disturbing,” said Maria Gallagher, legislative director for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, the Keystone State affiliate of National Right to Life.

“Pennsylvania women deserve better than abortion, which is the taking of an innocent, unrepeatable human life. We need to invest more in services that empower pregnant women to make life-affirming decisions for themselves and their families,” Gallagher added.

Statistics show 33,206 abortions took place in Pennsylvania in 2021, an increase of 1,083 abortions over the 2020 total of 32,123.

“Imagine how many kindergarten classes the number 1,083 represents. We mourn the loss of these precious children, who never got the chance to see their mother’s face,” Gallagher said.

The upsurge in abortion totals appears to be driven by the ever-rising number of chemical abortions, which now outnumber surgical abortions. The Department of Health states that 322 reports of complications from abortions were recorded in 2021—a dramatic increase of nearly 35 percent over the previous year’s totals.

“Why are so many complications being reported? This is a public health problem that deserves immediate attention from Health Department officials,” Gallagher added.

The number of abortions in Pennsylvania would be much higher were it not for Pennsylvania’s groundbreaking Pregnancy and Parenting Support Program, which provides comprehensive counseling and support for women facing unexpected pregnancies. The program, administered by Real Alternatives, has become a model for the rest of the nation.

The statistics would also be higher were it not for the many other pregnancy resource centers throughout Pennsylvania, which offer everything from diapers to day care referrals, and from mentoring to maternity clothes to pregnant women in need.

PA Lawmaker Seeks to Expand Abortion

The days of the slogan “safe, legal, and rare” are long gone in Pennsylvania. Some lawmakers make no secret of the fact that they do not want abortion to be rare–in fact, they are making every effort to increase abortions in the Commonwealth.

A co-sponsorship memo by state Rep. Dan Frankel (D-Allegheny County) is the latest example of this disturbing trend.

The proof lies in the subject line of the memo: “Expanding Access to Abortion.”

Rep. Frankel wants to expand the “pool of providers” by having non-doctors perform abortions. As he states, “I am introducing legislation that would allow physician assistants, nurse-midwives, and certified registered nurse practitioners to prescribe medication abortion.”

He is referring to chemical abortions, which are rapidly eclipsing surgical abortions as the leading cause of death of preborn babies in Pennsylvania. A number of legitimate safety concerns–both physical and psychological– have been raised about chemical abortions for mothers.

Rep. Frankel is in the minority in the PA House of Representatives, but abortion giant Planned Parenthood is doing its best to change that, pouring countless dollars into campaigns to replace pro-life lawmakers with pro-abortion zealots. This is why it is incumbent upon voters to know the stands of office-seekers when it comes to the life-or-death issue of abortion.

Pennsylvania is home to a staggering 32,000 abortions each year.
We cannot afford policies that seek to expand that number even further.

A Ring Symbolizing Life

I wear on my finger a symbol of the Culture of Life.

It is a ring with two dates: 1972, the year before the tragic U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade was decided, and 2022, the year Roe was finally overturned.

The ring comes courtesy of COL (Culture of Life) 1972, a family owned and operated company in Pennsylvania. The company offers clothing and other merchandise which celebrates the incomparable gift of life. It was founded as an alternative to retailers that support Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion operation.

Each time I look at the ring, I am reminded of the nearly 50-year struggle to rescind a dangerous and lethal Supreme Court ruling. I mourn the more than 63 million preborn children who died as a result of that traumatic decision.

But I also have tremendous hope–that wrongs can be righted…that bad decisions can be reversed…and that compassion and sanity can be restored.

In essence, I wear an unusual type of promise ring–a symbol of the promise of the beauty of life. I wear the ring in expectation of a future in which each preborn baby and her mother are treasured and protected, and life is respected as a fundamental good.

Governor’s Claims are Without Merit in Lawsuit Against Constitutional Amendment

HARRISBURG, PA – The Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation issued the following statement in the wake of Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf’s lawsuit against a Constitutional Amendment which would keep abortion out of the PA Constitution:

“The Pennsylvania General Assembly has a right to seek to amend the Constitution, and to do so without the consent of the Governor,” said Maria Gallagher, legislative director of the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation.

“Prior to Roe v. Wade, the common law, statutory law, and case law of Pennsylvania all prohibited abortion. Therefore, Gov. Wolf’s claims that this Amendment is ‘removing rights’ from the Constitution or ‘scaling back’ on a fundamental right of privacy that includes a right to abortion is false,” Gallagher said.

Such a right never existed in the Pennsylvania Constitution. There is no reference to ‘abortion’ in the PA Constitution nor is there any case construing the PA Constitution to include a right to abortion,” Gallagher added.

Pro-abortion groups, however, have filed a lawsuit–currently before the PA Supreme Court–trying to get the current Court to find a non-existent right to abortion in the Constitution and to force taxpayers to fund abortion.

This Amendment simply states that the Constitution itself does not mandate these things and it leaves the decision of what the law should be regarding abortion to the elected representatives of the people–not to the Court.

In the absence of this amendment, the Court could usurp the legislative function and require that abortion be allowed on demand up until birth and also require that taxpayers fund it—all contrary to the will of the people!

A Pro-Life Christmas Story

I vividly recall the scene, since the details are forever etched in my memory.

I stood before the abortion center, knowing that each car parked there represented a tiny, irreplaceable human being who was being led to death.

It was a sobering sight–all the more so because it was near Christmas.

There is something particularly surreal about being present at an abortion facility at Christmas time. After all, at this time of year we recall an unmarried teenage Mom who gave birth to the child Christians would call the Savior.

Mary, of course, had her Joseph. Far too often, women today are left abandoned by the fathers of their children. It is that desperation that can lead them to the abortion center door.

Thankfully, however, there are so many people who are willing to stand in the gap to support pregnant women at their time of need. No pregnant woman should be made to feel as if she is all alone. A supportive, compassionate team may be as close as the nearest pregnancy resource center.

May pregnant women this Christmas find all the love they need to bring their babies into this world–a world which is desperately in need of the hope their children can provide.

Pregnant and Without a Job, She Found Help

I had just picked up some coffee, hoping the jolt of java would help me power through the rest of my day.

As I approached the intersection, I saw her, holding a sign which read, “Pregnant. No job.”

I beeped my horn and signaled for her to come up to my car window. I knew handing her cash was not enough–she needed much more than a few dollars could bring. She needed hope, compassion, companionship–not to mention a car seat and baby clothes.

What she needed was downtown–at a pregnancy resource center.

I quickly gave her the name of the center. The stoplight turned and I had to join the parade of traffic passing through the intersection.

But my conscience would not allow me to abandon this woman, or the distressing situation in which she found herself. So I ultimately circled back, parked the car, and approached her again–this time with cell phone in hand, ready to give her the address of the pregnancy center.

I explained to her the resources and services which the center could provide. She seemed a bit incredulous, not realizing that there was an entire facility dedicated to serving the needs of pregnant women, free of charge.

Pregnancy resource centers provide a critical safety net for women who find themselves in difficult situations. The comprehensive counseling and mentorship which the centers provide can be crucial to a pregnant woman’s journey.

Internet ads, billboards, and flyers can all help to spread the word. But sometimes the best messenger is another person, who can carry the message of love through a personal interaction.

I am so grateful for my local pregnancy center, and the many centers which dot my state. They provide a safe haven for women and their babies during difficult times, and contribute greatly to the quality of life in our communities.

They are a beacon in the darkness, and their light of hope shines brightly during these stressful times.

May We Always See the Miracle of the Unborn Child

I will forever remember the intensity of those eyes.

I would gaze into them as I was nursing, and they would pierce my soul. I never felt so connected with my baby girl as I did when I looked into her pale blue eyes.

Science tells us that a baby’s eyes start to develop a mere 19 days after conception. These windows to the soul carry with them so much possibility and promise.

Yet, nearly 900,000 times a year in the U.S. alone, that possibility and promise come to a terrifying end. The culprit is abortion, which forever steals from those eyes of the majesty of sunsets, the glory of flowers, the pristine wonder of new fallen snow.

So much of our humanity is expressed through our eyes. Who among us has not been deeply touched by the kindness expressed through the eyes of someone who truly cares for us?

As I was in church the other day, I saw a man lift up a baby and stare joyfully into her eyes. It was a moment of profound connection—sacred time.

Part of the tragedy of abortion is that the mother is robbed of the experience of gazing lovingly into her baby’s eyes. The bond between mother and child is severed in a most violent and heartless way. In fact, it is only in denying the humanity of the preborn child that abortion is able to flourish. It is through intellectual blindness that abortion proliferates.

As advocates for life, it is incumbent upon us to teach the world about the development of the unborn child. People need to know that by the 10th week post-conception, a preborn baby can move her eyes into a squint. Our fellow travelers on this earth need to know just what is at stake with every abortion—the loss of an unrepeatable human life.

May we always see the miracle inherent in a preborn child and share that miracle with the world!
